Cheap PowerGenix ZR-PGX1HRAA-4B 1 Hour Quick Charger with 4 AA 1.6v NiZn Rechargeable Batteries Review

I bought the 4-pack with the quick charger recently. After about 2 months of usage, I’m happy to report that these are the best rechargeable batteries I’ve used in years. Now I don’t have Eneloops to compare with, and in fact I was about to buy a set of the Sanyo batteries when I first heard of NiZn batteries. I decided to go with these and try my luck. My current lot of NiMH cells are mostly crappy Energizers – never, ever, buy them! But I do have a set of that are really good; so clearly no all NiMH are bad.
Anyway, my uses for these batteries are mainly for Point & Shoot digital cameras. Every P&S digital camera I have ever owned eats AA cells in a matter of minutes. Be they alkaline or freshly charged NiMH (even the good ones), it doesn’t matter, they just can’t hack it. I’ve seen this on my Kodak, Pentax, Nikon, and Olympus cameras (all of them were supposed to work with NiMH by the way). My wife is the primary user of these cameras and her needs are random – there’s no way to predict the need and charge up a fresh and spare set and hope they lasts. Well, the PowerGenix cells have been just great in these P&S cameras. None have had a problem with the higher voltage, and the cameras just kept going. Shelf live was not a problem either.
I’m now debating whether I should buy more of these batteries or a set of eneloops for comparison. The problem I see with eneloops is that I would want a good charger/conditioner as well and that’s not cheap. But I also don’t know how many recharges these NiZn cells will last (I don’t believe any of the mfg specs regardless of chemistry) and that may tip the balance one way or the other.
Some additional thoughts – these batteries are not for every type of use. One reviewer mentioned how the higher voltage would likely burn out a flashlight. Yup, definitely not the right kind of use! He also complained about the recharge time of 2.5 hrs – well the product label I read was pretty clear that it was not a 1 hr charger. And for comparison, NiMH rapid chargers that can top off a cell in 15 minutes are generally to be avoided anyway as they really stress the cells and don’t really charge them fully. So such comparisons are moot in my mind.
At the end of the day, what counts is whether these cells work well in a given application. I’m happy to say that for P&S cameras, they have outperformed everything that I’ve tried thus far. My cameras include both old and recent models.
