Cheap Retro Game Challenge Review

If you like any of the genres represented (fixed screen shooters, forced scrolling shooters, platform/puzzle, platform action, console RPG, top-view racing) you will almost certainly enjoy the rendition here. The games are sort of hybrids of the best games of their era, often with a novel twist.
For most players, there will be at least one game that makes the cartridge worth purchasing on its own, and multiple enjoyable titles. On the flip side, most players will also run into a game that they don’t especially like, as well. The cheat codes help with this issue, and so were an inspired touch. (provided in-game, no less)
The biggest complaint I had with the game is that you have to play all of the games in sequence to be allowed to play the next. I never really enjoyed top-down racing games, and you have to play through one of these twice. (or two of these, once if you prefer looking at it that way. It’s really the same game twice, though.)
Since I didn’t enjoy that style of game, the two times grew tedious.
The next biggest irritation is that the goals reset the game. Just announce it on the lower screen for pity’s sake, and let the game continue! This costs quite a bit of time without adding to the fun. Hopefully that’s been repaired in the sequel. Hopefully that sequel is coming over here. (For that matter, it would be nicer if there were multiple challenges achievable at once, and in any order. I think the sequel fixes most of my issues with the game.)
The last complaint is that a few of the games are too short. Now, for the most part that’s a good thing, so you can move on. In the case of Haggleman, I kinda wanted more variety to the levels. HG3 was, in my opinion, the best game in the collection, but was only a few levels long. HM1 & 2 were similar enough that they seemed alternate levels of each other. (more or less)
That’s essentially my entire list of complaints, so all in all, it was a great collection. If these games were released on the NES back in the day (and they could have been) almost all of them would now be classic greats.
