Norpro 18 Piece Decorating Set

Cheap Norpro 18 Piece Decorating Set Review

I have been using these a few weeks now and am happy with the set. I don’t bother with the pastry bags, I just use a cheap generic storage bag and toss it afterward. The tip and coupler fit just fine and then I don’t have to clean the pastry bags, which are always a pain.

This set has a nice basic starter group that will keep most people happy who just want simple and not to professionally decorate.

Victorio Food & Vegetable Strainer

Cheap Victorio Food & Vegetable Strainer Review

My Grandma, Aunts, and Mother have all used Victorio Strainers for decades and the advice I got was, “buy a Victorio”. (Not sure if any of them ever owned anything different.) Some have different versions, but they all love them and faithfully use them every year!!! My Aunt and Mother have never had theirs break, and they have put a lot of ‘miles’ on their machines. It sure makes canning easier, because you don’t have to core or peel the apples. (not sure if fruit with big pits like Prunes and Peaches need to be pitted.) Apples need to be cut in half or in quarters, but these machines sure make the process a whole lot easier!!! I’ve looked at other machines that do a similar process, but most are similar in cost and you still have to do more work. My sister bought one a year or so ago and loves hers! I’m dreaming of the applesauce I’m going to make, cause I’m buying one today!!!

DeLonghi BAR32 Retro Pump-Driven 35 ounce Espresso Maker

July 2, 2010

Cheap DeLonghi BAR32 Retro Pump-Driven 35 ounce Espresso Maker Review

In my search for an espresso maker in the 0 range, I tried Krups, Brevile, and DeLonghi. DeLonghi BAR 32 Retro is just the best. The water tank comes out, which makes it easy to fill. It will do two espressos at a time, which is great for morning. It’s very simple to operate and super simple to clean. The steamer/frother knob is extremely sturdy and easy to clean–others were flimsy and came apart easily. I love that the tamper is attached to the machine in an easy to use spot. One less accessory to keep up with. It’s quick and easy to preheat and operate. It produces excellent crema on the espresso drink. The styling is cute on the counter next to stainless steel oven. In fact, I boxed up my Starbucks pot and put it away! And the coffee is hot, hot, hot. (this was a problem with the other two). I’m having fun mixing sugar free flavor syrups from World Market in my milk for fun flavor changes. I haven’t even had to use espresso ground coffee to have great drinks. So far I’m just using my normal coffee. No more expensive coffee drive thrus for me…my family & friends are using my kitchen for their coffee Jones, too. Disadvantages are minor, in my book. You have to watch your espresso cups and turn the brewer off yourself or they could overflow; there is no automatic shutoff. The steamer ends up adding a lot of water to the milk sometimes. I haven’t mastered the frother. Sometimes I get tons of frost, other times it gets hot with just a little froth. No matter how the froth ends up, though, the coffee is terrific!

Oster BVSB07-Z Counterforms 2-In-1 Pre-Programmed Blender, All Metal Drive

Cheap Oster BVSB07-Z Counterforms 2-In-1 Pre-Programmed Blender, All Metal Drive Review

I’ve only had this blender for about 5 days but I am very impressed. I like how it has an all-metal drive. The main reason we bought the blender was to make smoothies, malts and mixed drinks. We have made the later two so far and I’m extremely impressed with how it pulverizes the ice. I also like how there is a frozen drink setting that does everything including reversing the blades. We bought the additional milkshake blade and I am extremely impressed with that as well. I don’t know about durability since I just got it but it seems to be really well made. It is fairly loud when blending ice. I expected this though so I wouldn’t consider that a downside. I would recommend this to anyone. By far the best blender I have had.

Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer

Cheap Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer Review

This product works very good with my smoker. It measured temperature and I could view it remotely. However, it has a couple of flaws the engineering staff needs to fix:

– Put a magnet on the back on the transceiver. There isn’t anywhere to put the transceiver (the unit with the temperature probe) on the smoker. If you don’t have a shelf on the smoker, it just hangs very close to the heat or you have to balance it on top.

– Upgrade the firmware to tell the receive when it has lost connection and create a button to force a reconnect. If the unit drops to connection, it won’t tell you and you think you have the right temperature when it could be varying.

– Setting upper and lower temperatures – unless you like the sound of 14-year old playing a GameBoy on crack, setting upper and lower temperatures involves over 100 beeps to get it set properly. By the time I was done setting it, I was ready for a vasectomy. There should be a function to hold down the button and have the unit speed through the numbers. Right now, one button push = one degree change. Get your fingers warmed-up.

Unless you absolutely NEED to have one right now, wait for an upgraded version to come out with these changes.

Sunpentown RF-320S 3-1/5-Cubic-Foot Double-Door Refrigerator, Stainless

June 30, 2010

Cheap Sunpentown RF-320S 3-1/5-Cubic-Foot Double-Door Refrigerator, Stainless Review

My decision for a compact refrigerator was a double door design. Separate freezer and refrigerator.
I highly recommend this product and this brand (Air Purifiers USA). After ordering the product, I contacted the manufacture (via the email confirmation details), and asked about the color options. White on white vs. Stainless on black. (I read them on the product description page, but was not able to make the selection during checkout). The gentlemen suggested putting the order on hold for 2 hours, he then contacted the warehouse, determined availability, and called me back and I selected Stainless on black. The order arrived in 3 days using regular shipping and the box was very well packaged. In fact, the original packing carton was inserted into a slightly larger carton (with good padding) and the entire packing was first rate.
The refrigerator is a thing of beauty. A full size look in a compact size unit. Stainless front with black box. The top has a convenient molded tray, designed to be used as a ’spill proof’ counter top. The topside is large enough to hold coffee maker, cups, etc. and will never scratch.
Time will tell if this unit will perform as expected. My confidence is high and I am a very pleased customer.

Lodge Logic 5-Quart Double Dutch Oven and Casserole with Skillet Cover

Cheap Lodge Logic 5-Quart Double Dutch Oven and Casserole with Skillet Cover Review

It’s been years since I’ve used cast iron to cook with and I recently bought this dutch oven after reading many reviews of different brands.

I love this unit- you are basically getting 2 items for the price of one. Prior to purchasing this, I read the reviews and a few mentioned using the lid as a fry pan- and it does a wonderful job at that. I bought the trivet and my husband made bacon in the lid with the trivet to flatten the bacon- great job there!

My set arrived perfectly seasoned and ready for use. I did go ahead and reseasoned it prior to the 1st use, even though it wasn’t necessary. From the first use and all the way to tonight’s dinner, which was superb, we have yet to be disappointed.
Even though cast iron may be a little heavier- it does such a great job at cooking evenly. I made a pork roast with veggies and at a little less than the normal temp I bake it, this dinner cooked considerably faster. The meat was incredibly moist and the veggies were just right!

Clean up is a snap- I had went ahead a purchased a Dobie scrubby from a local store, which is fine to use on these and less expensive than the Lodge (sorry Lodge- have to recommend what works best and saves money here) scrub brush. It cleans up quickly and after a thorough towel dry- it is ready for the next meal!

This is a very well constructed product and the fact that is made in the USA makes it all the better. I am already getting ready to order the 12 inch Lodge skillet and looking at other items, as I feel these are well worth the money and I’m certainly not breaking the bank to get these incredible items!

Norpro Stainless-Steel Holder with Cotton Cooking Twine

June 27, 2010

Cheap Norpro Stainless-Steel Holder with Cotton Cooking Twine Review

I was going to save money and purchase twine without a dispenser, thinking I wouldn’t use it often, but I read Natasha Stryker’s excellent review and realized there are so many uses for a basic cotton twine: Anchor tall perennials to bamboo stakes in my garden (instead of the non-biodegradable, plastic twist ties); hold in place the burlap I use to wrap my shrubs in late fall; thread some twine through a comb handle and my pumice foot buffer, which I can now hang off the hooks of my shower caddy; use twine as rustic “ribbon” to finish a gift wrapped in plain brown paper; tie tender branches together to prevent damage from heavy snowfall; make an impromptu clothesline in the bathroom … the possibilities really are endless. Oh, yes, you can truss a chicken or stabilize a pot roast, too!
